True love is almost as hard to find in a book as it is in real life. Dozens and dozens of lesfic romances try to get it right, but often fail. That is why authors like Gun Brooke are so valuable to the genre.

The earnest, heartfelt writing appeals to me, sometimes speaking to personal experience that cuts quick to one's very core:

..."During phys ed, when the other girls talked about their latest crush on a boy, I felt nothing. Instead, there was a girl.” Manon smiled as if she could see her. “Funny, I can’t even remember her name, but she was shy and really pretty. I liked to watch her play basketball—the way her body moved, and how she beamed after she scored. I exchanged maybe ten words with her, but the fact that I found her cute and attractive…and had nobody to talk to about it scared me to death."...

Coffee Sonata is beautiful and sweet, sometimes so much so it makes your heart hurt. And there's certainly lots of love to go around, even if that is what contributes to the one weakness in this novel: too much story and not enough time to tell it.

Vivian and Mike, Manon and Eryn...four wonderful women, all unexpectedly falling into relationships they never see coming. Of the two relationships, I cherished the one Vivian and Mike share the most. They feel so fiercely and fear so much.

Manon and Eryn are great as well, but the "coming out" issues and family concerns hit just a bit too close for me. As terrific as the book is, Coffee Sonata bites off more than it can chew at times. It might fare just a tad better as two separate romance novels.

Coffee Sonata Gun Brooke 9781933110417 Books Reviews

This is my favorite kind of story May/December meets opposites attract. Buy this book and then immediately read The Blush Factor. These two are definitely in my all-time Top Ten.
I read this book a month ago, but just now started writing reviews. This one still lingers in my memory. I loved the story line and the authors writing. The author gave well developed characters, and I really enjoyed there was more than two main characters. I liked the age difference in the love story. Buy this book, you won't be disappointed.
I love this book. The characters are so life like and I love how they interact together. Each one has their own adventure and their own problems. And they pair up nicely. The opera singer and the cafe owner. The reporter and the charity chairwoman. I have read this book over and over and love reading it again and again. Great love making scenes and great romance. I love the happy ending. How about a sequel?
Gun Brooke is a talented story teller who has created four interesting women - two older, two younger. Coffee Sonata is the story of how these four women come together to form friendships and love interests. The four women are from very different backgrounds. Brooke has the talent to make the reader believe that a world reknowned opera singer could fall for a coffeehouse owner and that a rich, sophisticated businesswoman would fall for a small-town reporter.

The connecting force for these women is music - not coffee as the title would indicate. It was in Brooke's descriptions of the music that they create together that I think she failed. Music is, under the best of circumstances, difficult to describe adequately without comparing it to another piece of music. Since the women were creating something new, Brooke had nothing to compare it to, and thus failed to put the music in the reader's mind.

It would be interesting to read a sequel to this book to see how well the women fare in their new relationships.
With four main characters & two romances to keep up with, I expected this might be a confusing read, but the author did a great job of writing in a way that left for little confusion. A great story, creative characters with interesting backgrounds & nice closure, although I do see ways for the author to revisit these characters any time she wants. The description of the music they created was done well enough to make me want to sneak a listen of the real thing. When advance purchase of the coming cd was offered in the book, I found myself looking for a preorder button to click. A worthwhile read, for sure.
A great book by a great author. The story of four women with issues who meet and help each other overcome and move on to better things. All with secrets that they feel will destroy their friendship with the others in the group but needing the closeness to get along. One, Manon from old money afraid if she comes out it will ruin her foundation meets Eryn a newspaper reporter. The other a big famous opera singer with a life changing secret with a small town coffee shop owner with a big secret in her past. Like a of Gun Brooke's other books a very easy book to read and will leave you wanting more.
This is a nice, sweet love story. Actually, it's two love stories, and I enjoyed both couples, and how they came to know each other. I'm a sucker for May/Dec love stories, so Viv and Mike were my favourites but Manon and Eryn were a close second. The friendships between all of the women were wonderful too.

Music plays a secondary character in the story, and I doubt I'm the only one who read the story who wished there was a soundtrack to go with it. One of Gun's best.
